In one of the greatest days in our club history our senior hurlers won the Dublin County Senior B Championship. In ideal weather conditions the Barrs and their opponents St Pats gave the big crowed a great game of hurling.
As the score line tells there was loads of great scores and action. The Barrs had the best of the first half and led by five points at half time. St Pats hit a purple patch ten minutes into the second half scoring 2-2 in a ten minute spell to go three points up.
Then the Barrs showed their grit and determination that the club is well known for. We drew level and went a point ahead going into the last four minutes but St Pats drew level going into injury time. Extra time was on the cards when a St Pats defender was adjudged to foul the ball with a hand pass.
Man of the match Stephen Costello stepped up and put the slitor between the posts for a historic win. There was great sense of joy and celebrations after the match. The captain Patrick Whelan gave a great speech where he mentioned the big Gozzy.
The team sang their Gossie song and there was many a tear shed. On the way home to the club the team stopped off at Glasnevin and placed the cup on the Gozzy’s grave. Ger O’Reilly sang the big Gozzy song as the team joined in. this was followed by a great night of celebrations in the club.
To the players, management and everyone involved with this team over the years well done, it is a great achievement. Yet if this team wants too they can go all the way and win an A championship, but that is for another day. You can beat the drums but you cant beat the Barrs!!
