Jun-Hurling-Champ

Crumlins O’Toole Park was the venue for the Junior Hurling Championship semi final between the Barrs and Civil Service Hurling.

On a bright sunny Sunday morning everything was set up for a great game. The first half was a deserter for the Barrs as they went in at half time trailing by nine points. Things didn’t look much better half way through the second half when the Roy of the Rovers of Finbarrs, Big Gosie, was introduced with 12 minutes left.

The big man banged in two great goals to put the Barrs two points up with four minutes injury time remaining. The Civil Service brought the margin back to a point when Dathi Forgarty got a great point to put the Barrs up with time up.

In one last attack the Civil Service got a goal to win the match by a point. It was heart breaking for the lads who showed such great spirit and effort to get back into the game.

Well done to the management and team who have done the club proud and put in great work this year.

Quarter Final Defeat for Senior Hurlers

Hurling-Champ_1

On a windy wet Saturday in Ballyboden, the Barrs bowed out of this year’s Hurling B Championship. The game was well contested right through the match with Ballyboden taking their chances and the Barrs having fifteen wides.

Having conceded a third goal mid way through the second half which put Endas seven points up, it was a up hill struggle to win the game. The Barrs had lost the the levels of intensity and work rate, which were one of the main reasons behind the success of last year. The final score was Ballyboden St Endas 3-14, the Barrs 2-11.

In one way its nice to have everything finished in the first week of October but then again when you’re in a position to win a championship its great to be in Parnell Park in the last Sunday in October.

Hopefully we we learnt from this year and keep the progress going next year. Its three years since the present management took over and the team has brought great pride and excitement during this time.

They have won promotion to division one, won an Intermediate Championship and reached the Leinster Championship Final, which was a first for the club.

A Bittersweet Day

2 Hurlers

On a damp wet afternoon in Marley park at ten to seven, the weekend was looking very bad for our senior hurlers as they went down to Ballinteer St Johns.

The local club’s ground and club house is situated in a lovely position at the foothills of the Dublin Mountains. The pitch was in great condition as the two teams went into battle for the points.

The Barrs went in at half time ahead by a point after they went behind to a early goal by St Johns. The game was won and lost on chances taken and not taken. The Barrs missed two penalties and two certain goals as Ballinteer scored their penalty and took their goal chances.

At full time St Johns won on a score line of 3-13 to 1-12. As the Barrs player huddled together under the shadow of the Dublin mountains in conference and gloom, the word came in that our near neighbours Plunketts had beaten St. Vincents.

This meant that the Barrs went through to the quarter finals and the mood of everyone changed to joy!! Three games and another championship. It’s up to the players now!!

Retirement of Micheal Ó Muircheartaigh

Friday, September 17th, 2010

The Barrs of Cabra wish Micheal Ó Muircheartaigh all the best on his retirement. The Ó Muircheartaigh moment that our club members have been talking about over the last two days is the match between Tipparary and Galway.

Pat Fox got the ball and Joe Rabbit went in chase of him. Micheal’s take on this was,

“You never seen a Rabbit chase a Fox, well here in Croke Park its happening before my eyes.”

Go raibh milie maith agat o na phobal as Cabrach Baile Ath Claith.

We also want to thank Micheal on his support for the club in the promotion of our native languish in th Cabra area through the Gaelschoil Bharra which the club founded. ‘Slainte agus Saol chugat.’
