Weekend Review 3rd March

Monday, March 3rd, 2014

The weather was again a big winner over the weekend with pitches in John Paul Park being called off, however most games did still go ahead. On Saturday morning both our U 8s and U9s traveled out to Trinity Gaels for their Go Game football matches, with the U9s recording a great win. Our U10s had a good win out in Naomh Olaf in Sandyford and our U12s won against Round Towers in Clondalkin. Our U14 hurlers were unlucky to loose out to Kilmacud Crokes in Stillorgan.

On Sunday the action began with our U15 Camogie girls loosing out to Brigids in Blanchardstown. The main game of the weekend was our senior hurlers game with neighbours Erins Isle. Having lost out to Isles in last years game, our lads were anxious to get a win. We started the game well and led 0-10 to 0-1 at halftime. It always looked like a goal would kill the game as a contest and when Eamon Dillon found the net 10 mins into the 2nd half, the game was all but over. We went on to win by 9, 1-14 to 1-5.

Our junior 5 hurlers began their league campaign with a convincing win over St Vincents 2-7 to 0-5 and our junior 7s lost out to Realt Dearg 2-12 to 2-10. Our minor footballers were beaten in a bizarre game in Judes. Despite leading by 14 points with 10 mins remaining, we were stunned by an amazing comeback from the home team to loose out by a single point. In the final game of the weekend our U15 hurlers recorded a fantastic 8  point victory away to Naomh Mearnog in division 1.

Weekend Review 24th February

Monday, February 24th, 2014

Photo: Furious by name. A True gentleman by nature. You will be dearly and sadly missed by all your Finnbarr's family pal. To his sons which he idolized, adored and whorshipped I cannot put into words. Be strong for each other just like your dad was. The strength of each other will guide you through this dreadful and dark time. I honestly have the privilege of knowing Derek, play along side him and above all call him my friend as I would hope he would call me. Sleep well Furious. Keep practising those frees!!!

The weekend started on a very sad note, as players and other members from the Club traveled down to Celbridge for the funeral mass for Derek O’Brien. Derek is pictured above in the stand in Parnell Park, waiting to collect his medal after the 2009 Intermediate hurling championship win over Round Towers. It was great to see so many members in Celbridge to pay respects to a great club man. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

Following the recent bad weather our playing season finally got under way on Sunday with 4 games down for decision. Our Intermediate footballers got their season under way with a disappointing 5 point defeat against Clan na Gael in Ringsend, 2-8 to 1-16. Despite some good individual performances, overall it was a poor result in a game we could have won.

Our minor hurlers were well beaten by Kilmacud Crokes in division 1 of the hurling league. We went in only a point behind at halftime, but Crokes second half display was at a different level to ours, and they went on to win comfortable. In a first for the club, we had a second minor hurling team competing at the same time. Unfortunately they were also beaten by a strong Finians team, but it was great to be able to field two teams which will only improve skill levels during the year.

In our final match of the weekend our U15 footballers were also well beaten by Whitehall in Ellenfield in their first game of the year.

Minor Football Champions

Photo: A picture of our Minors who beat Trinity Gaels on a score line of 6-13 to 0-07 to win the Minor B Championship

A large crowd gathered in O’Toole park yesterday for the final of the Minor B Football Championship as we were seeking our first victory in minor football in our 68 years. The team went into the game in confident mood having come through the earlier rounds in stylish fashion.

We hit the ground running in the final with Trinity Gaels early point cancelled out in the fifth minute by Wayne Losty’s well taken goal. The goal was an excellent team move, as the ball was moved quickly from our half back line up to the inside forwards and was finished to the net. This was to be a trend of the first half with Trinity Gaels unable to live with our forwards, particularly our full forward line, who between them contributed a massive tally of 6-9.

In truth the game was all but over at halftime with Finbarrs on top all over the field. Even when Trinity Gaels did break down our backline they were unable to find a way past Karl Grimes who dealt with anything that came his way. Our solid defence has been key to our success this season as we have conceded just one goal in the 6 games in the championship.

In the end the scoreline read 6-13 to 0-7 and our lads were well worth their win. The cup was presented to our captain Ryan Curley and the celebrations began. Great credit must be given to the management team of Joe Lyons, Ian McDonnell, Anthony Costello Jnr and Derek Sweetman Jnr for all the work they have put in throughout the year.

Naomh Fionnbarra: Karl Grimes, Mickey Scully Andy Kenny Dylan Owens, Sean Murphy Darren Langan (0-1) Eoin Lohan, Rory McGrath Daniel Gilhooley, Ryan Curley (0-1) Tommy O’Neill Mason Napier, Sean Tobin (3-4) Lee Cooney (1-4) Wayne Losty (2-1).

Subs; Sean McDonnell (0-2), Dylan Curley, Ryan Carey, Donal O’Connor, Sean Carey & Jay Roe.
