Weekend Review 20th May

Monday, May 20th, 2013

The main event over the last weekend was the U14 boys hurling Feile. This year we played in Russell Park on the Navan Road in Division 2 of the competition. Feile is the Irish word for Festival and the competition always produces a great Festival of Hurling. This year was no exception. Having won the PJ Troy competition last year, our lads had high hopes going into the Feile. In the end it was not to be, as we lost our opening 2 games to St Brigids and Ballinteer. We had chances to win both these games but were unlucky, especially in the opening game. The lads showed great heart to put in a great performance in beating Castleknock in the last game to send the large crowd of Barrs supporters home with something to cheer about. Great credit must be paid to the management group with this team for the huge progress that is being made. There will be many good days for this team in the future!

Our under 14 Feile hurling team and Mentors 2013

Our Senior hurlers were beaten by St Pats in the Championship last Wednesday in Parnell Park in a game we could have won. With Ballyboden beating St Vincents, we now find ourselves in a do-or-die battle with Vincents later in the summer to stay up in the A Championship. Sometimes our lads are at their best when they are faced with this kind of game, so hopefully they will put the work in over the next few weeks to prepare for the match.

There was another festival type atmosphere in the bogies on Saturday morning where football took centre stage. Well over 100 children from U8s through to U11s showed off their skills in the different Go-Games leagues. These league are played in a non-competitive format, with skill development and inclusion being the important things. On Saturday afternoon our U16s easily beat St Judes in a top of the table clash in the bogies.

On Sunday, it was back to hurling action with 3 big games on. Our minors were well beaten by a strong Cuala team out in Shankill. It was a disappointing performance from our lads, who are capable of much better. The minors take a break now for a few weeks as many of them will be sitting exams in June.

In Clontarf our Junior Hurlers put in a big performance against group favourites Scoil Ui Chonaill, to fall just short at the end. For the second time in 3 years, Scoil beat us with the last puck of the game in this championship. This result means we will have to win our last 2 group games to progress in the championship. This is still possible if the lads put the work in.

On Sunday afternoon our 3rd team travelled to Cloughran to play Whitehall in the D championship. We had won our first 2 games so all the pressure was on Whitehall. They played very well and beat us comfortably in the end, but our lads fought back strongly in the last 10 mins. One win from the last 2 games should be enough to see us through to the quarterfinals.

Weekend Review 13th May

Monday, May 13th, 2013

We had a real mixed bag of Results over the weekend with 14 teams in action. On Friday night our U14 Ladies Football team played Thomas Davis in the Bogies. Although we were beaten the girls played very well. The team continues to improve every week and our scoring threat is increasing with every game we play.

The big game on Saturday was the 1st Round of the Intermediate Football Championship against Na Fianna out in Lawless Park in Swords. After a great 1st half performance which saw us 6 pts up at one stage, we faded badly in the second half and we were beaten on a score line of 4-8 to 0-11. We now enter the Intermediate Shield.

On Saturday morning juvenile hurling took centre stage with our U8s, U10s and U11 all competing in the Go Games leagues. The U8s travelled to Clonee to play Erin go Bragh with 22 players and won their 2 games. The U9 game was off due to the children from Gaelscoil Barra making their 1st Holy Communion, we hope they all had a great day. The U10s were unlucky in defeat to plunketts in the bogies with some great individual performances from our lads. The U11s had a good win in Finglas against Erin’s Isle after a great display of hurling. Our U14 Camogie girls had a big win against Naomh Barróg in the bogies.

On Saturday afternoon again it was all hurling. Our U13s were beaten by a strong Naomh Barróg team in St Annes Park. Our U14s received a walkover from Ballinteer St Johns. In the bogies our U16s had a very comfortable win against Kilmacud Crokes in the bogies. This puts us back in the running for the Division 2 league.

On Sunday morning the minor footballers were beaten by 2 points by St Brigids in the bogies. We fell behind in the second half but fought back very well and were unlucky not to get a result in the end. This team still has a lot of potential and are making steady progress this year. This game was followed by our junior footballers against Whitehall in AFL6. This team is a great mix of youth and experience and the mentors got the mix right and we ran out 3 point winners. In the afternoon the AFL10 team drew with Raheny out in St Annes Park.

Also yesterday morning our U11 Camogie had a really great win out in Rush against a previously unbeaten St Maurs team. Our girls played some great stuff and won on a score line of 4-2 to no score.

Under 10 team of the Week 11th May 2013

Saturday, May 11th, 2013

On a cold May morning in the Bogies our under 10 hurling team took on our neighbours OP/ER. Mangers Steven Brown and Ciaran Kehoe fielded  a 19 players squad which they split into two teams. Both matches were very closes and very well contested by both sides. Some great skills were showing by both sets of players.

The Barrs as a team showed great determination and spirit in both matches and were unlucky not to get a result. Some players have made great strides over the last two years. In saying that lots of work still needs to be done by the team to enhance their skill levels which is essential for hurling.

Overall the team showed great battling skills and work really hard as a team which is a good sign even though the game was not going their way. For this grit and determination they get team of the week, Thanks to all the parents who attended the match. Go raibh maith agaibhh.

Padraig Mc Gillvary Cup Competition 2013

Sunday, May 5th, 2013

Padraig and his great friend Connor Hickey ( Thanks to Margret Hickey for the photo)

On our all weather pitch to day the family , friends  club members and players will gather for the sixth anniversary of the Padraig Mc Gillvary cup competition  who’s anniversary occurs this week. Padriaig was tragically killed as he was going to training out side the club house six years ago . Having joined  the club at the age of three Padraig loved the hurling and Gaelic football. He was also a pupil of Gael scoil Bharra. Picture above with Padraig is his soul mate Connor Hickey who was cruelly taken away from us in 2011. Both played for the same team. This team which is our under sixteen team at the moment have done the memories of both Padraig and Connor so proud by both their actions on and off the pitch.

Championship match review Ballyboden

Wednesday, May 1st, 2013

To start to write a piece on last nights match is hard after been beaten by 21 points.Yet sometimes when you feel so disappointed with a result that is when your at your most strongest. A result like that really focus your mind on how we are going to do in this years championship and how our hurling progress is going in the club.

First of all let me commend the players and the management of the senior team who played last night. Wakening up this morning and thinking about last nights results will be a hard.Yet most of us in the club over the last thirty years have felt that feeling after taking such a  hammering.

None of those players last went out to be beaten. Every one gave it their best shot on the night against a very strong Balyboden team who would not be off the stander in Kilkenny terms in Dublin club hurling.

But life goes on and as the championship is on a group bases we are still there with a shout. We are still in the “A’ championship were a lot of other teams would love to be. We will probably be written off by a lot of people as not been up to this level. We will probably be told we are very limited.

This may be all true and maybe at times we losses the run of our self at what stander we are at. Yet we are there on our own merits having won the B champioship in 2011 and its up to ourself to stay there..

So what can we learn from last night. First of we need to sharpen up our hurling skills which comes down to the basic and the players themselves. Secondly we need to take our chances which at this level only come now and again. Thirdly we need to realises that the whole team need to be putting in the effort as a unit.

I could give a thousand reason or excuses why we were beaten last night but we need to focus on our self.If we want to stay in the A championship the work has to be done. As was said in the preview article progress has been made and a lot of really hard work from the players and managers have gone in over the last ten years.

This progress needs to be kept going and it is up to every one in the club to do this. So lets set out our stall and use last night as a spring board to keep this progress going forward. We need to learn from last night and work hard on our weakness. Last eight of the senior “A’ champioship becons. Nicky kehoe

Football Feile Preview

Monday, April 29th, 2013

Our Under 14 footballers are busy training away for the Feile Peil na nóg competition this Saturday. Under the management team of Stephen Hyland, Stephen Costello, Billy Hyland and Richie O’Reilly the lads are really looking forward to the weekend. A narrow win last Friday night in their league game in the bogies will set the lads up perfectly for Saturday.

Many of the lads played in last years competition when the Barrs team were narrowly defeated in the final in Parnell Park. This year we play in Naomh Olaf’s Pairc Uí Bhriain in Sandyford Industrial Estate. Our opponents in the group are Raheny, Olafs and Templeogue Synge St. This is a tough group, but one that our lads are capable of progressing from.

We wish them all the best for the weekend and hope that many of you can go out and support the lads.

Inter Footballers win

Monday, April 29th, 2013

The Intermediate Footballers recorded their second win of the league campaign on Saturday evening win a well deserved victory over Clan Mhuire out in The Naul. The picture above shows the lads winning the AFL3 title 3 years ago out in the same venue.

The game was similar to the Dublin and Tyrone league final in that it was very stop-start and wasn’t a free flowing game. Most of our scores came from frees as our forwards always had the upper hand over the Clan Mhuire backline who struggled to contain our pace up front. Strong performances from Carl Turner in the half back line, Ger O’Reilly in midfield and Ger Doddrill in the full forward line were the backbone of this win. We led by 2 points at halftime and went on to win by 6 on a scoreline of 0-13 to 1-4.

This was an important win for the team who were unlucky to lose out by a single point to Nh Barrog midweek, but this win puts us back on track. It also sets us up well for our 1st game in the championship next week against a fancied Na Fianna side out in Swords.
