Weekend Review 13th May

Monday, May 13th, 2013

We had a real mixed bag of Results over the weekend with 14 teams in action. On Friday night our U14 Ladies Football team played Thomas Davis in the Bogies. Although we were beaten the girls played very well. The team continues to improve every week and our scoring threat is increasing with every game we play.

The big game on Saturday was the 1st Round of the Intermediate Football Championship against Na Fianna out in Lawless Park in Swords. After a great 1st half performance which saw us 6 pts up at one stage, we faded badly in the second half and we were beaten on a score line of 4-8 to 0-11. We now enter the Intermediate Shield.

On Saturday morning juvenile hurling took centre stage with our U8s, U10s and U11 all competing in the Go Games leagues. The U8s travelled to Clonee to play Erin go Bragh with 22 players and won their 2 games. The U9 game was off due to the children from Gaelscoil Barra making their 1st Holy Communion, we hope they all had a great day. The U10s were unlucky in defeat to plunketts in the bogies with some great individual performances from our lads. The U11s had a good win in Finglas against Erin’s Isle after a great display of hurling. Our U14 Camogie girls had a big win against Naomh Barróg in the bogies.

On Saturday afternoon again it was all hurling. Our U13s were beaten by a strong Naomh Barróg team in St Annes Park. Our U14s received a walkover from Ballinteer St Johns. In the bogies our U16s had a very comfortable win against Kilmacud Crokes in the bogies. This puts us back in the running for the Division 2 league.

On Sunday morning the minor footballers were beaten by 2 points by St Brigids in the bogies. We fell behind in the second half but fought back very well and were unlucky not to get a result in the end. This team still has a lot of potential and are making steady progress this year. This game was followed by our junior footballers against Whitehall in AFL6. This team is a great mix of youth and experience and the mentors got the mix right and we ran out 3 point winners. In the afternoon the AFL10 team drew with Raheny out in St Annes Park.

Also yesterday morning our U11 Camogie had a really great win out in Rush against a previously unbeaten St Maurs team. Our girls played some great stuff and won on a score line of 4-2 to no score.

AGM 2011

Tuesday, December 27th, 2011

Our annual general meeting took place on the 15 of December. A good attendance was recorded and it was one of the better AGM’s over many years.

A number of good debates and contributions were put forward from the floor and the club officials. It is good to see that we are just holding our heads above water financially.

This is due to the efforts of many of our members over the year. We also got a run down on the state of our teams and our coaching. A good debate about physio’s and player’s insurance took place. All in all it was a good night for the club.

Champions, 2011 Dublin Hurling Senior B Championship

Monday, October 31st, 2011

In one of the greatest days in our club history our senior hurlers won the Dublin County Senior B Championship. In ideal weather conditions the Barrs and their opponents St Pats gave the big crowed a great game of hurling.

As the score line tells there was loads of great scores and action. The Barrs had the best of the first half and led by five points at half time. St Pats hit a purple patch ten minutes into the second half scoring 2-2 in a ten minute spell to go three points up.

Then the Barrs showed their grit and determination that the club is well known for. We drew level and went a point ahead going into the last four minutes but St Pats drew level going into injury time. Extra time was on the cards when a St Pats defender was adjudged to foul the ball with a hand pass.

Man of the match Stephen Costello stepped up and put the slitor between the posts for a historic win. There was great sense of joy and celebrations after the match. The captain Patrick Whelan gave a great speech where he mentioned the big Gozzy.

The team sang their Gossie song and there was many a tear shed. On the way home to the club the team stopped off at Glasnevin and placed the cup on the Gozzy’s grave. Ger O’Reilly sang the big Gozzy song as the team joined in. this was followed by a great night of celebrations in the club.

To the players, management and everyone involved with this team over the years well done, it is a great achievement. Yet if this team wants too they can go all the way and win an A championship, but that is for another day. You can beat the drums but you cant beat the Barrs!!

Championship Finals 2011

Wednesday, October 19th, 2011

In a dramatic last minute the Barrs beat Ballyboden St Endas in the semi final of the Senior B Championship at Parnell Park last night.

The ball rebounded off the post from Eammon Dillions shot which was pounced on by Big Davie Doogan and  incoming Stephen Costello who finished it into the net.

A great win which puts the Barrs in the A championship next year. They meet the highly fancied St Patricks team in the final with their two top Dublin players Liam Rush and Shane Stapleton. They had a great win last night and will be hot favourites to beat the Barrs in the final.

A good night for the parish. Our under 16 hurlers are also in the championship final against Balinteer St Johns. This is their second championship final in two years. Well done lads!!

Senior Hurlers in Parnell Park

Tuesday, October 18th, 2011

Best of luck to our senior hurlers in tomorrow nights semi final. One match away from senior A!

Intermediate Quater Final Championship

Saturday, October 15th, 2011

On a scoreline of 1-13 to 0-3 points our senior footballers were well beaten by a well drilled Skerries Harps team who are trained by Charly Redmond.

In all areas of the game the lads found it very hard to get themselves going in Parnell Park. With alot of injuries going into the game the Barrs needed big performances which they did not get. Having done all the hard work in the last round against Ballyboughal it was disappointing to see no performance from the team.

Hopefully we can get some drive back for our last league match against Fingallians which we must win.

Matches 8th Oct 2011

Saturday, October 8th, 2011

Best of luck to our Senior hurlers in the quarter finals of the B championship today at 4 o’clock in O Toole Park. Our minor footballers play Parnells away tomorrow in championship. Our third hurling team play St Judes away in the morning in C championship play off for relegation. All support welcome to matches.

Hurling and Football Results

Sunday, October 2nd, 2011

Our Minor hurlers were held to a draw on Sunday morning by OP/ER in a tight contest. We could have won it well if we had taken our scores. A very good team performance with loads of commitment and hurling skills shown by the team.

Our under 16 hurlers had a good win over Naomh Barróg in the C championship in the Bogies.

Our under 15 were beaten in the shield semi final on Sunday morning by Thomas Davis out in Tallaght. A seven point margin was between the teams. Davis are in the A league which our team will be playing in next year.

Our senior footballers had a great win in the intermediate championship against Ballyboughal out in the Naul. The score was 2-13 to 2-9 as the Barrs put in a great team performance with a man of the match performance from Anthony ‘Growler’ Costello.

We now have Skerries Harps in the quater finals.

Our second adult football team were beaten by Ranelagh Gaels in the Bogies in the quarter finals of the C championship. It was a game we could of won but our lack of focus on the ball let us down.

Dublin Win and Weekend Matches

Monday, September 19th, 2011

Our long trip on our Camio de Santiago final came to a end as iceman Cluxton kick Dublin in added time to their first All Ireland in sixteen years. With seven minutes to go and surrounded by Kerry folk at the canal end my mind was full of despair as Kerry looked to have the game over. I was dreading the long walk up the Royle Canal or the North Circular Road to the club in Cabra.

Sixteen years of carrying the cross up these pathways have taken their toll and another one would of broken the back. Then McManamon got the goal, Nolan kicked the point and Brogan put us in front. Kerry being Kerry, responded and the doubts were there again. Then the free awarded in front of the hill. Would Cluxton do it? The answer was yes and the walk back the Camio North Ciculer Road was pure joy.

When I reached the club house which was jammed all day the place was hopping and this party went long into the night.A big man who was missing from the day was the big Goss,he would off been over the Moon with the win. A minutes silence’s was held in the club house during the celebrations.

Well done to the Players, Managers, and county board for all their great efforts.Cabra connection to the win is a selector and coach is  a Cabra man Mickey Whelan from Carnlough road and Stephen Cluxtons family butchers was a famous institution on Dowth Avenue for many years.

Senior Football
The senior footballers had a fine win against St Marks on Saturday in the Bogies. The whole team worked hard with the foward line in great form with man of the match preformance from Paul Tuner jn.

Under 15 Hurling Championship
Our under fifteen hurlers put up a brave display against St Bridget’s in Russell Park on Sunday morning. The match went in to extra time after both teams finished level in normal time. The Barrs thought they had won by a point but the referee ruled against this. A great battling performance form the players and good work been done by the managers.

Under 16 Hurling
Our under 16 won division four of the league on Saturday, Congratiolation t management and team.
