A Comment on Tom Humphries Locker Room

Monday, September 20th, 2010

Having read Tom’s article in this morning’s Irish Times, I have decided to air the issues on our clubs web page and hopefully have a general discussion on our Facebook page to find out what people think.

The points I make are my own personal opinion and not the clubs. I have great time for people or organisations who try and make things better with new ideas. The GAA have done some marvelous things over the years.

The pitch which was been criticised for a number of years has been sorted out to become one of the best playing surfaces in the world. The hotel built beside the stadium was a great idea and has provided a great service for people on the weekend of matches.

Junior Hurlers

Our junior team travelled out to Lucan Sarsfields ground on a wet Sunday morning. This was the quarter final of the championship and the Barrs were looking forward to the challenge .

Choco’s men didn’t let the parish down as they went on to win a tough game by four points. Great performances were given by Billy Hyland, Thomas Gleason, Hocks Rooney and Stephen Brown.

Christy Mauler O Neill was everywhere and his fitness has come on great. Hopefully we can push on now and win this championship as we have a home game in the Bogies for the semi finals. Well done lads!!

A Bittersweet Day

2 Hurlers

On a damp wet afternoon in Marley park at ten to seven, the weekend was looking very bad for our senior hurlers as they went down to Ballinteer St Johns.

The local club’s ground and club house is situated in a lovely position at the foothills of the Dublin Mountains. The pitch was in great condition as the two teams went into battle for the points.

The Barrs went in at half time ahead by a point after they went behind to a early goal by St Johns. The game was won and lost on chances taken and not taken. The Barrs missed two penalties and two certain goals as Ballinteer scored their penalty and took their goal chances.

At full time St Johns won on a score line of 3-13 to 1-12. As the Barrs player huddled together under the shadow of the Dublin mountains in conference and gloom, the word came in that our near neighbours Plunketts had beaten St. Vincents.

This meant that the Barrs went through to the quarter finals and the mood of everyone changed to joy!! Three games and another championship. It’s up to the players now!!

Retirement of Micheal Ó Muircheartaigh

Friday, September 17th, 2010

The Barrs of Cabra wish Micheal Ó Muircheartaigh all the best on his retirement. The Ó Muircheartaigh moment that our club members have been talking about over the last two days is the match between Tipparary and Galway.

Pat Fox got the ball and Joe Rabbit went in chase of him. Micheal’s take on this was,

“You never seen a Rabbit chase a Fox, well here in Croke Park its happening before my eyes.”

Go raibh milie maith agat o na phobal as Cabrach Baile Ath Claith.

We also want to thank Micheal on his support for the club in the promotion of our native languish in th Cabra area through the Gaelschoil Bharra which the club founded. ‘Slainte agus Saol chugat.’

U8's

The U8′s travelled out to Man of War and got a very friendly welcome. The pitch is situated in a lovely part of north Dublin.

It is up on a height which you wouldn’t think existed in this part of the country. The view takes in Ireland’s eye, Howth head, the Dublin Mountains and a view of the city which is outstanding.

We had four great games and all the children had a great time. The U14 team were beaten by 5 points but there was alot of disatisfaction with the referee in Commercial. The team are still on top of the league and hopefully they will keep the progress going.

The U13′s also had a problem with the whistler out in Erins Isle. They went down by a point with some very bad decisions going against them. Our U12 team had a good win while our U11′s enjoyed themselves in Garristown.

Minor Hurling Championship

Monday, September 13th, 2010

Last Sunday St Kevin’s travelled to the Bogies with high hopes of securing two points in this group of the Minor Hurling Championship. On a sunny morning in Cabra the Barrs were looking forward to the challenge and after ten minutes went three points ahead.

All changed in the next ten minutes with St Kevin’s hitting two soft goals to go in front. It was a lead that they never relinquished until the last ten minutes of the game when the Barrs scored two goals.

The winning and losing of this game centred around discipline and the Barrs came out on top in that department. Having lost one of their top players with 12 minutes left, St Kevin’s lost their way even though they fought back to within a point in the seventh minute of extra time.

The first half was very scrappy with frees been the main vehicle for scoring. Troller had a blinder with some great scores and a man of the match performance. The Barrs showed their traditional strength of keeping going until the end with a strong team performance. Both teams gave it their best shot and the game was played in a very sporting manner.
