Blacknwhites

Black and Whites 2-20 Naomh Fionnbarra 1-07
AIB Leinster Club Junior Hurling Championship Final
Sunday, 29th. November, 2009

On a cold wet day we made the trip to Kilkenny to play Black and Whites on their own ground. The pitch was in the middle of the country and a loud convoy of cars and buses descended on the quiet Kilkenny countryside. A huge crowd from Cabra packed the small ground but it was soon clear that this wasn’t to be our day.

The home team set out their stall early on with points from Paul Murphy (three), Tom Moloney, Peter Cleere (two) and Niall Kennedy inside the opening quarter. Midfielder Gerry Dodrill scored a brace in reply for us, but we were dealt a crushing blow in the 19th. minute when Stephen Costello was issued with a straight red card.

Playing with the strong breeze, Black & Whites continued to tack on the scores and took a 1-11 to 0-2 lead into the break thanks to Tommy Farrell’s 27th. minute goal.
We responded brilliantly with three unanswered points on the restart before Niall Paget’s shot ended up in the net. With nine minutes to go, we had cut the margin down to 2-14 to 1-7, but the home side then put the issue beyond doubt thanks to late points from Paul Murphy as they secured their second Leinster junior title in seven years.
Our fantastic campaign was over for 2009 but the dream lives on.

Club Race Day in Fairyhouse

Saturday, November 28th, 2009
On Saturday, 28th. November one hundred people attended the club’s annual Festival Day out at Fairyhouse Racecourse. The group met at the clubhouse at 11.00am and were taken to the racecourse by bus. The hosts for the day were Martin Costello and Paddy McGivery. We had the Arkle Room booked and it was decked out in the club colours. The parade ring was just across from the function room and Brian Brady and Nicky Kehoe were soon eyeing up the horseflesh and picking out the winners.
After a lovely four-course dinner the serious business of betting began with Robber Abbott and Christy Shannon cleaning up on the Hennessy Gold Cup. Jimmy Cullen’s crew had an up and down day betting-wise but they made up for it by being the wine tasters for the afternoon! One man of wit, namely Champer Ward, was heard to say that there must have been some blackberry bush at the racecourse and Jimmy, Dennis and Colm must have done some picking!
A heavy fog descended on the course so most people stayed indoors for the races. The Young Turks of Brendan, Niall and Wack Wack cleaned out the bookies at the last race and were seen dividing up their winnings before they got back to their table.
The music started at 4.00pm and the bands were great. The hooley kicked off and everyone got into the Christmas mood, with Wayne Dempsey as our Master of Ceremonies. At 7.30pm we departed Fairyhouse and made our way back to the club where a nice cup of tea and sandwiches were waiting. Another band came on to finish the night off. It was a great day and everyone had a ball.
The club wishes to thank Paddy Meehan, Robert Abbott, Christy Shannon, Wayne Dempsey, Tommy McGee, Brendan Quinn and Niall Brady and, in particular, the organising committee of Martin Costello and Paddy McGivery for helping to make the day such a success.
